Hate to admit it, but we used a minivan for the "kid" years. Toyo
Sienna, great people mover, very comfortable, decent power, very
respectable fuel economy and dead ass reliable. 
When we weren't doing the full on hauling, the 200q 20v wagon worked
great. Car seats fit, and plenty of cargo space, including underneath
the load floor.
If you don't want a minivan, I would consider a well maintained S6
wagon. Indestructible 5 cyl turbo motor, plenty of power, lots of room
for car seats, good cargo space and Audi ride and handling. 6 speed is a
plus, not a minus. No need for auto just because you have kids belted
into the back seat. They can't reach the pedals from back there.....:-)
