Oops, I misread.  I thought you switched from 15-50 (winter oil) to 5-40
(summer oil).  Which did not make sense to go to a thinner oil in the summer
but like I said, ramblings not thoughts.  That said, mebe just the thinner
oil?

I guess at the end of the day, better gas mileage for whatever reason is
cause to celebrate.  So go out and make a few WOT runs :-)

Nope. I'm comparing summer to summer - I used 15W50 last 5 summers and never
got much more that 250kms per half tank.

Increased tire pressure with warmer temps.
Reformulated summer petrol.
Quicker warm-up ==> Quicker to closed loop.

Just my ramblings not to be confused with thoughts.

Since changing summer oil from Mobil 1 15W50 to Elf 5W40 three weeks ago,
I've been getting an extra 20 to 30 kms extra per half tank. Just filled up
and got 310kms from 37 litres - close to 12 litres per 100kms (or 20mpg).
 
Mostly city driving and this week with roof bars and boat carrier on top
(sometimes with the boat too)
