I think everyone assumes these things would be done properly. The idea is that "you're in there" and it is best to do as much PM as possible. The crank seal story is a good warning but I would still change it (and just did on my car). The same think with the cps. For $10 and a little time it could save you a lot of hassle later.

I had a shop ruin the oil pump ($400) because they mangled the removal of
the crankshaft seal on my 93 S4 (same 2.2t as yours)...and it wasn't leaking
at 150K. So approach that decision with caution.
I've had no problems with timing sensors and I'm at 210K now.
And I think Theodore meant to add water pump to the list...they're cheap
enough.
