Here in the Peoples Republic of Maryland we don't have those right turn on red camera's.....yet. I am sure we will get them next week as I am sure the money can be used to supplement the budget.
We have red light camera's and photo radar. The officials always say the same thing, it's not about the money but rather safety. Near my home they set up some photo radar camera's on some poles. Someone came by one night and painted the poles fluorescent orange so they could be more easily seen. If it was really a safety issue then the vendor who runs them and the gov't would have left the paint, after all, the more people see the camera's then the less speeding there will be.....but the camera's were quickly stripped of the identifying paint in 2 days.
We also have speed camera's placed in parked cars and minivans. The good thing was that they placed orange traffic cones in front and behind these parked cash registers so they were easy to spot if you were paying attention.
Now they have these portable stainless steel boxes, probably 2 ft square and about as high. While they are stainless and shiny, their small size makes them difficult to spot. They are small enough that they can be strategically placed behind a tree or other similar obstruction which makes them very difficult to spot. I'm not sure how they pick them up and move them to another location, haven't walked up to one, but I didn't see any anchor points in the concrete, so maybe they just weight a ton or two.
In my County there was an ordinance that did not permit an outside vendor from collecting money from these camera's, yet the County hired such a vendor to run the camera's. People were getting tickets but one guy that got a ticket fought it, he discovered this ordinance and he won. However the County & the vendor had been collecting the money for quite some time before this guy found that ordinance. Don't know for sure but I don't think they returned the money they had already collected. The county then quickly changed the ordinance to their favor.

Manny
