Manny,
You are correct. The locals all use either VASCAR or ESP.
VASCAR - Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder - where they have 2
white lines on the road and when you hit the first one they flip a
switch on a timer and when you hit the second line they hit the switch
again. The computer already knows the distance between the lines and
calculates your speed. Most locations you can see the white lines ahead
if you know what to look for. And again - if it is at night, they have
to have their marker lights turned on.
ESP - Electronic Speed Preventer - they tape 2 rubber air tubes across
the road at a predetermined distance (about 2 feet usually) and again
you speed is calculated based on the time it took you to cross the
distance between the tubes with your front wheels. The tubes tie into a
box usually tied to a telephone pole with an output display sitting in
the cop car. These are harder to see from any distance but if you see
them at the last minute you can lock up your brakes, rip them off the
road as you skid over them, and when you are getting chastised for what
you did you explain you were trying to avoid the dog you saw running
towards the road :-P
Manny also knows PA roads well even though he lives in Maryland. They
will quarantine off 10 miles of interstate to pave 100 feet. Else they
will repave 20 miles and have you squeezed down to 1 line for this 5
month procedure. Then flip to the other lane for 5 months. Then do the
same to the other direction the next year. And then start over again
the following year.
If anyone knows the PA turnpike, that's what I-76 stands for -
Incomplete 76.
Now I-80 across the northern part of PA kicks a**. Just ask those from
the 2009 mid-west //S-Fest caravan. A couple hours of 3-digit cruising :-)
