Tom -
Conversion would be an expensive huge project that made no financial sense. In late 2009 Audi finally relented on at least one of their numerous idiotic American marketing concepts and started sending 2.0T quattros so you'd really just want to get a later one w factory AWD. Too had they cling to their stoopid idea that TDIs shouldn't be Quattro because they are such microbrained fckwits they can only imagine selling diesel to Americans on basis of being "gas mileage economy" concept. That'd be the one to get although 2.0T is a nice little motor too. Anyway I'd far rather tackle manual converting a DSG than Quattro converting a FWD but in reality wouldn't do that either as the DSG is great.
I have the wife in a FWD 2.0T A3 DSG and its great. Little small in drivers compartment. Small car in general compared to ye olde C4 wagon. Some little fussy things you learn about 2.0Ts (PCV system flaws, cam followers) but that's same for any interesting motor. Keep in mind A3 and sibling R32 are "Haldex Quattros" which are not your old Quattro system... More FWD biased etc. The DSG is no crappy Tiptronic - very very nice dual clutch setup and apparently they've got all the reliability bugs worked out that were in the early models. It's a lot of fun actually. We wanted a 6MT but then test drove the DSG reluctantly and ended up loving it.
I have to say its a great fun little car but nothing like the C4... Not really a like for like replacement. I thought for 2 secs about getting one for myself but its just a bit small inside for a full timer for me and I'd then inevitably dump lotsa bucks into suspension and brakes and tunes and turbos etc and probably end up wishing I'd invested in a more "substantial" car in the first place. A super built 2.0T Quattro A3 would be a blast though, especially if it included aftermarket Haldex tunes and mods which are now available.
