Doh! I forget that there's such a thing as a non turbo 5cyl quattro sometimes.

The white smoke from catalyst could be related to the HC issue or the HG problem. fuel pressure regulator, fuel injector/s, MAF, vacuum leak, TPS, 02 bad, bad engine temp sender. White smoke from leaking headgasket should result in a sweet smell from the exhaust. You should also do that leakdown warm, and then check for pressure in the A/F reservoir
