Hi all,
I had a stumbling problem after I'd gotten my car back together.
Well, I finally got my hands on a good multi-meter (a Snap-On Vantage
no less) and checked the duty cycle on the car as a place to start.
It was bouncing around (the car was hot, so it was closed loop)
between 55 and 65%, which is high according to information I've gotten
here. So I adjusted down so it was between 42 and 48%, gave it a test
drive. The stumbling was less pronounced, but it seemed to have
eased. The car felt very sluggish though, so I turned it up so it was
between 47 and 52%. I've driven the car three times now with no
stumble. So I'm cautiously optimistic.
The interesting thing is this: After the car is warm, it will idle
with the duty cycle where I set it. But somewhat periodically, the
idle will jump up about 100rpm and the duty cycle will go to 99.2%
(I'm guessing it's full open the multi-meter just isn't reading it
right). Also, closing the WOT switch doesn't seem to have any affect
on the idle speed (I've read that it should).
I'm starting to think that the car had some issues while the PO
still had it, and his mechanic didn't fix them so much as tune around
them. I've found and fixed a number of small vaccum leaks, etc.
Next: Install the new front ball joints, tie-rods and subframe
bushings that have been sitting in my garage for three weeks.
Thanks everyone for the help, though the prize goes to Brandon
Rogers for telling me to check the DC first. Bill Bremer suggested I
check the back of my underdash fusebox, but my rear defrost doesn't
work, so I'll be doing that anyway.
