Even with the lock plates, there is a chance the alignment will shift if
things aren't tightened very well. I had my 4kq aligned and the ball joint
slipped in the slots twice. The alignment shop kept insisting that I was
hitting pottholes, when really, they just didn't tighten it enough. The
mechanic later admitted that he found one loose nut on my third visit.
Anyway, I think you need the lock plate to keep everything in place. It's
actually made of thicker metal than the A arm and sandwiches the top of the
A arm to the ball joint over a large area compared to just bolt heads.
