SV: [urq] Clutch or wastegate or what?

I have had the same problem with the LUK clutch, brand new and slipping like
hell. And I didn't find anything that was wrong. Switched to a sachs sport
pressure plate and the clutch was fine again.

Many thanks for all the replies to my posting.
Last night I took it for another test drive, this time with a passenger to
watch the dials and listen.

It seems fairly clear now that it is the clutch slipping. When it happens
the revs continue to rise with no apparent increase in road speed. Although
it feels like the power is dying (because of the sudden lack of
acceleration) the boost gauge (direct feed - not the one in the dash) holds
a steady 1 bar. Also Air/Fuel meter holds steady suggesting no air leaks. So
I think it must be the clutch.

The question is why? It is a brand new clutch, freshly built engine, and it
has done 400 running-in miles only.
Surfaces were clean when fitted.

The clutch came from EuroCarParts and was a LUK (ironic) 624 0839 00.
Eurocarparts assure me that it is the correct fitment for a 1987 WR quattro.
Does anyone have access to a LUK catalogue with a cross reference to the
Audi number to confirm it is correct for the car?

Louis-Alain - you suggested the sleeve the release bearing sits on might be
the culprit. How did this affect the action of the clutch on your car. I am
struggling to see what problems this would cause, unless it fell apart and
jammed the bearing against the clutch cover preventing it releasing
properly. But wouldn't this mean the pedal would not return fully. My pedal
feels fine. What's the story?

Look forward to hearing from you all with your thoughts.
Any advice on gearbox removal also gratefully received.

I have already decided that if the gearbox has to come out I will fit
another new clutch whatever the cause! - OEM clutch of course.

Finally - if there is anyone still awake after reading this epic - do you
know the correct figure for engine oil pressure at 3000rpm at operating
temp? Mine is giving 80psi at 3000rpm. Whilst I'm happy with this it seems
high. Whats the general concensus on this?

Cheers

Just when I thought it was all over, the car finished, on the road, problems
overcome and running in, I'm hitting problems.
If you have any thoughts, they'd be very welcome. Here's the symptoms:

Pull away in first, car pulls strongly up to 4000. (I'm sticking to 4000 max
whilst running in the new motor). It pulls strongly in second up to 4000.
You can hear the turbo spool up as boost builds. Boost approaches 1 bar
before the change up as far as I can see. It's difficult to watch revs,
boost gauge and road.
In third it pulls fairly well up to about 3 and then whistles and the power
drops off but revs appear to rise.
The same in fourth and fifth. Once it gets some boost in these gears it just
whistles, the power goes but the revs appear to rise.

Heres the details:
New engine (WR) largely stock.
Wastegate has been apart and is not yet set right. (How deep in from the top
face should the adjustment screw be for 1 bar boost?)
The Wastegate spring is I believe a Dialynx 1 bar
The ECU is sealed with a Dialynx sticker and I believe it may have had the
diode mod.
The clutch is brand new, 300 miles old now.
There are no fluids coming out of the bottom of the bell housing indicating
fluid contamination of the clutch plate.
No oil loss from engine.

Could it be a slipping clutch? - I think it is but can't think why it should
be.
Is it the wastegate simply dumping pressure because the spring is not
correctly set?
If the latter why does the rev counter rise?
I can't see that it can be the clutch but everything points to it.
If it is why is it OK in first and second?

I am at a loss to identify the real problem here. Any suggestions gratefully
received.

Thanks and Happy New Year to you all.
