This was certainly looked at. (and no movement confirmed yet) While I know
the Audi bearings of the era were "sealed", I did not know the inner races
were split and could allow for some movement. Given the number of large
cars I've owned with this bearing, a bad one must be a small probability.
I causes me to wonder if this was strongly suspected of being the culprit,
why would you try to mickey mouse it versus just replacing it?
Another source of front end clunks possible in pretty much all Audis (and
VWs and Porsches I'm told) is the wheel bearing shifting side-to-side in
the hub housing. I had this happen on my first 1987 4kq back when it was
new and under warranty. Lound clunk too. The dealer tech explained the
problem/cure to me (it involved a shim with a wheel bearing replacement--he
called it his "914 trick"). I have never explored this myself in any of the
many Audis I have owned since, but it makes sense and they did fix the
problem on my 4kq way back when that way. I think our '95 A6q avant may be
suffering from this and that will be my first opportunity to try and
resolve it myself (by the way--anyone have a wheel bearing tool they want
to loan???).
