It depends, of course, on what you mean by "low cost." You should be able to find what
you need in terms of actuators, nozzles, plumbing, etc., from serious racecar suppliers
(as opposed to "tuners"), but a decent-sized bottle alone will be pricey. Most on-board
systems have greater capacity than the typical hand-held, if for no other reason than that
you have to cover a bigger area, and can't actually direct the extinguisher at the source
of the flame.
As an intermediate step, you might consider just mounting your current extinguisher in a
convenient location (just ahead of the passenger seat is a pretty popular spot). That
would prevent the thing knocking around the inside of the car, and would probably allow
you to react faster.

Subject: [urq] Anyone have a fire supression setup under the hood?
Seems like with a 25 year old car I should have something in place to stop an underhood
fire. Anyone have any ideas on what's available for a low cost? I do have an old halon
fire extinguisher rolling around in the back seat - but I think by the time I stop the car
and open the hood it would be to late.
