Andrew,

Sorry, no pics.

I bought a new fusebox from a canadian supplier, Altrom, for 125$CAN. You
can find similar in USA. The fuse box is the same as Rabbit, Cabrio, Jetta
MK1, etc. Ask for 171_941_821C. And order a few connector blocks, some are
still available at dealer: 171_971_971A, 171_971_971B.

If I remember right, you'll get the black and the white connector-blocks,
but the blue will be melted, or maybe was it the yellow ? I don't remember
exactly. In fact, it doesn't matter much, since you can use any
connector-block in any place by removing the indexing tab with a knife.

You'll also need round female connectors, enough to replace the burned ones,
but they are discontinued in the parts listing. My dealer found some others
similar from another car, but I don't remember which. If your VW/Audi dealer
can't help, then bring the new fusebox to an electric auto supplier, and
show him. He will find an alternative, I am sure. If you have one, bring
also a connector block.

And before starting, find the electrical wiring diagram, it's mandatory.

Then, when you'll remove the old box, you'll see a huge mess of wires, but
once the box is removed, you'll understand what I am saying about
connector-blocks colors, burnt pins, etc. It's ugly, but it is repairable.
Take a look at this page:
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/urq.html#fusebx there is a
picture of the "mess" and of the "blocks".

The number he states, C15, A11, E2, etc, all refer to a block (A to E), and
a pin number in that block. You'll find these alphanumeric names in the
Wiring diagram too, that's why it is so important to keep a trace of your
work.

Once the car will be OK, you'll tackle the job of relaying the headlamps,
rear defrost, fuel pump, and engine fan. But only when the fusebox
replacement will be completed, and everything will be back to normal. One
job at the time.

Good luck ! It looks worst that it is, really !

To Louis-Alain, do you have any details/photos of what you did?  Did you buy
a replacement fuse box from a different car, or something from painless
wiring, or what?

Thanks again,

-Andrew
