[urq] UPG 2008 Planning

Steve:

I agree with you 100%.

Gary Brown has hosted UPG on the East Coast for several years, and for me
it's "one day out with the boys". It's easy to fit the event into my
schedule.

But for me, a national UPG would have to be a stop on my vacation...and the
family would tolerate, maybe even enjoy, a day or two of me talking about
cars with my "internet friends". Moab is a GREAT destination, with
rafting, biking, both Arches and both Canyonlands National Parks. The
original suggestion of Jackson Hole is also spectacular destination, with
the Tetons, Yellowstone, and the Snake River...I'd even love to do
Vegas/Bonneville/Zion/Bryce again.

All of these are 3 days from NJ, but I would be counting the days until UPG,
so I could caravan across the country with my kids in 2 urqs.

But put the event in a less interesting location,.....regardless of saving 2
days of travel each way.....I don't think I could persuade the family to
come, and I'd be a lot less interested in spending 3 days to a week of my
vacation time in such a location, and I'd be a hell of a lot less popular at
home if I took that time and went to the event alone.

So, in a nutshell, while I think the map and the calculations trying to
minimize the average distance travelled are interesting, if the venue is
interesting, the distance travelled really becomes a lot less important.

Bob
