We have installed/removed at least 20 coupe windshields and never once saw
or used any type of sealant. Actually; quite the opposite. You need to use
some type of lubricant (soapy water, WD 40 ) to facilitate getting the
rubber lip over the pinch weld and to help with installation of the lock
trim. The only time I could imagine having to use a sealant is if you had
some type of rust forming on the pinch weld but if that is the case you
would be much better off repairing the rust before putting the windshield
in; especially considering how rare that glass has become. BTW. A year or
so ago; I had made arrangements with Audi AG to make a run of the OEM
windshields. They agreed on three conditions: 1. An order of 100 pieces
at $260 (plus or minus a couple of bucks) FOB Denver, Colorado. 2. Prepaid
3. All windshields to one location for distribution to the final user.
After I arranged that; there was rumor that there was a run being made by an
aftermarket manufacturer and I dropped the request. I haven't seen an
aftermarket windshield since. Has anyone else? Any interest in renewing the
order with Audi? They indicated that the glass would come in containers of
25 each so we might be able to arrange distribution to 4 locations across
the States. It would take 3 months to set up and manufacture. This would
now be a non-profit venture run through USAUDICLUB and AUTO-UNION. Whatever
the direct cost from Audi would be the cost to each of us. I would
personally be interested in 10 of them and at one point I had a glass
company interested in taking 20 of them but I can't guarantee that now. At
the time I inquired of the glass;(over a year ago) there were approx. 50 of
the gaskets available at $200 each in Germany. I think it might be wise to
inquire about a run of the gaskets also. Peter
