[urq] Repair fiberboard inner door covers?

I've been doing a bit of fiberglassing for my boats. What I would do first is drill a hole at the end of the tear to prevent the tear from ever growing, humidify the fiberboard (expose to high humidity environment, maybe you could lightly mist the warped area not sure, overwetting would be bad) and dry the board while pressing the warped area, you just want to alleviate the stress so it's back to the proper shape so your repair is straight forward. A little fiberglass fabric and resin on each side of the tear and it should be stronger than it ever was before. While it's out and you are messing with it you may want to do some preventative and coat the entire thing to strengthen and waterproof the thing to prevent any future warping etc. when I fabricated my last boat motor cover I used fiberglass resin (no fabric, just like paint) to seal it before I reupholstered it. it will take a while to fully outgas/dry. West marine makes a bunch of easy to use systems and has how to videos etc on their website if you decide to. A couple of lite coats with any waterproofing sealer should help it in the long run. You may want to enhance the plastic sheeting door protecter while the panel is off also.

Subject: [urq] Repair fiberboard inner door covers?

Hi gang,

What suggestions do y'all have for repairing the fiberboard door covers?
One of mine is damaged with
a ~5" jagged tear in the board, which is bulging out from the back an inch
due to slight warpage of the panel.
I don't want to install the door panel for fear of it ripping apart the next
time I remove it from the door.
I did a little research but did not find anything for that form of
fiberboard repair.

I don't have any experience with the stuff, but I was considering epoxy
resin laminate or perhaps layering on
fiberglass fabric with the epoxy resin. System Three makes a form of it
designed for wood+fiberglass boat
construction, which seems reasonably well suited to the fiberboard of the
door card. Does anyone have direct
experience with fiberglass that is relevant to this fix?

Thanks,
Eric
