Ed, the IST doc has some diagrams showing details of the bomb, starting on page 48 of the PDF.  Maybe those will help?  They don't show an o-ring or crush washer for the sphere, but I would expect something there.  That rod sticking up sounds like the cut-off valve.  If so, seems like you may have lost a cap there.
