[V6-12v] Timing belt tools

OK, here goes:

Now for the no-tools part: It is important to realize that both of the camshafts WILL move when you take the belt off. This is fine. Before taking the belt off, you need to clearly mark the position of both of the sprockets on the adjacent cylinder wall. Make multiple marks with a white-out pen or permanent marker. As far as the crank sprocket, this comes off when the little bolts around the big bolt come undone. This means you have to mark the position of the way the sprocket was on before you took it off. I marked it the same way I did with the cam sprockets, making three marks altogether on the sprocket and then on the adjacent parts. The three sprockets HAVE to be in phase  with one another and this is where you have to be very careful. Be sure to use a marker that is very visible and won't rub off. Keep in mind that after you put the new belt on, you NEED to turn the engine one complete revolution over by hand to see if any pistons are meeting valves. If you're careful and meticulous about marking like I was, everything will be alright. I suppose The two tools give you peace of mind but they ARE NOT necessary. The timing belt job on a 12v is a piece of cake compared to the 20v S6. HTH,

Please share with us the tool-less procedure!

I had my mech perform the timing belt job 3 years ago.  Being a competent
(but non-Audi) mechanic, he was able to perform the service w/o the tools.
I never did find out how he was able to do this.   Fast forward 3 years and
I am willing to do the job myself to save some $$.   If you could post the
instructions it would be greatly appreciated.

Folks,

An alternative to renting tools would be if someone has access to the
tools and could take enough measurements to allow reproduction. I have
access to a rather cool machine shop and would rather easily be able to
build the tools. All I need is an accurate drawing.

Maybe if I could supply a handful of tools to the group at say $50/set
we wouldn't have the missing tool problem anymore.

I know that the timing belt can be changed without the special tools,
but I would consider that a bit risky. I'd much rather do it right...
