Clive,
I'm not sure which recessed part you are talking about. The inner joint is
one unit and can only be mounted on the transmission the right way. To get
the outer joint on correctly, the three little pieces need to be installed
correctly.
With the inner boot on and fastened and with the outer joint off, install
the parts in the following order:
1) Outer boot.
2) Spring washer (notice that it curves slightly. If you hold the axle with
the open (outer) end facing up, the spring washer goes on curving up like a
very shallow bowl. It pushes the spacer out that way.)
3) After the spring washer comes the spacer. The tapered end on the spacer
faces the outer end of the axle.
4) Then install the circlip in the grove at the end of the axle.
5) Install CV joint (tap with plastic hammer until circlip engages).
6) Complete installation of boot.
7) Install shaft in car.
Remember to replace the center bolt, circlip, spacer, and spring washer
with new parts.
Does this answer your question?
