[V6-12v] K & N

I remember reading a test comparison some guy did for all the available
filters for the V6, including genuine Audi, all the 'OEM' brands, and K&N.
To his surprise (and mine) the K&N came out far worse than any of the others
judging from the relation between filtration vs. airflow. As I recall, he
had it carefully oiled and set up and everything. It scored high on airflow,
but had bugger all filtration capability. Funnily, the genuine Audi filter
had the best ratio of filtration to airflow. Guess they do sometimes get
spare parts right!

Is it worth it anyway when you'll probably glean a maximum of about 2 bhp
from an air filter mod on these engines?

If you want a genuinely beneficial upgrade, why not have a try with some
Ecotek valves. Heard good reports about those. They are culled from F1
thinking - they create a very specific type of vortex in the air/fuel
mixture that causes a more complete and even combustion. Not only do you get
more power, but lower emissions and better fuel economy and your engine will
last longer to boot (no coking and preserves O2 sensors and cats). Sounds
like magic, but the government tested them here in the UK and found the
claims to be accurate.

If you look on their website in the 'cars and fitting' section:

http://www.ecotekplc.com/more_cars_12.htm

it includes a fitment to our beloved V6 12v engine, and a link to a magazine
article where the editor of CruiseQuest (a performance car mag) fitted them
to his V6 12v with very positive results.

If I could afford a pair with the silencers, I'd have fitted them by now,
but I'm a bit short at the moment ;) (you need two for this size of engine,
fitted in series and you need the silencers because apparently they're a bit
noisy without - wouldn't want to disturb that lovely V6 purr...)

Best
