[V6-12v] Pinking under light throttle

Hesitation was fixed (it eventually turned out to be a bad O2 sensor, so
both were replaced. No other running problems since then.

There is no EGR on this car.

The timing belt was replaced 20,000 miles ago, but by a non-Audi dealer. I
intend to replace it in the upcoming Head Gasket job, and have both the
required special tools. It's a good thought though. If it's just that, I'll
be a happy man. I have to say though, that even if there were a slight
intake/exhaust timing issue, I would expect pinging to occur at all throttle
positions, and to have shown itself before now. Also, I would still be
concerned at the fact that the knock sensors don't seem to be catching it,
although as you say, it could be that they are but the it's outside the
ECU's correction parameters. If this last is the case, it should throw up
'limit exceeded' fault codes, or similar.

I'll clean the MAF. I'll leave the TB exam and clean til the intake manifold
is off the car for the head gasket job. All intake seals will also be
replaced while that is off the car.

Cheers,
James
