[V8] Hall Sensor [was cam speed sensor]

Hi,

Following up on an earlier post. If you will recall, a hook up on the VAG
computer gave a code of "Cam Position Sensor" failure. I have since deduced
that this means a faulty message from the Hall Sensor. I tried to search
the archives for information on this item, but without success.

First, is there a definitive way to test the sensor to make sure the code
reading is correct and I have the right sensor? Second, I understand the
sensor is in the right distributor. Can the sensor be purchased separately,
or do I have to get another right distributor if it is bad? Third, I recall
a discussion that the right distributor on the V8 PT might be
interchangeable with another in the VW range. Any BTDT's on that concept?
Finally, is this a repair I can make myself, or should I leave it to someone
who knows.

Thanks in advance.
