[V8] checking auto trans fluid level

So, IF the trans might have been overfilled at some point, and I just
drain what I can get out, will it equalize the qty so that I can only
add 4 quarts and have a good fluid level?

I pulled the dipstick last night while the car was not running and
parked on my slightly-less-than-level driveway. There was no fluid on
the dipstick. I'm assuming that since it was not running, that's not
a problem. This was before I posted about how to properly check the
level.
