BILL,
I had the right front axle replaced at 115k because of noises and leaking grease out of the boot.
cost $243 total for a local shop. R&R
they send the axle out to a sub vendor who specializes in rebuilding axles.
then the axle in re installed - both inner and outer CV's were repaired.
Call around. Avoid the dealer and that "$800 bill".

Hi Bill,

A friend of mine got the CV axle for about $60.00 at a Foreign Parts store
(Meiers in Las Vegas). Of course, you have to give them your old half axle.
You can probably get a rebuilt half axle anywhere for under $100.00 dollars
with the exchange. You do not have to pay $800.00 for that at the dealer.
That's ridiculous. Also, is the boot on the CV torn? Do you hear noises
when you turn the car into a corner? These would be signs of a bad CV.
Finally, if you do go ahead and replace, get the whole axle (actually, a
half axle) instead of trying to just replace the cv joint. Less time,
expense, and headaches. Hope this helps.

Kind regards,
