I'm too smart for my own good.
Yesterday I planned to reseal a power steering pump for our V8, which has
been leaking a bit more and more from the pump, and have it all ready to
switch today.
So I pulled the pump apart and discovered that there was some corrosion
around the pump shaft where it passes through the front seal. Pump/car
must have sat for awhile before I got the pump. So, OK, I'll use my last
reseal kit to do another pump I've had sitting around waiting for a
"nothing to do" time. I happily get that pump all ready and pull the V8
into my workspace.
Today I pull the pump out of the engine compartment and get ready to slide
the one I prepared yesterday in its place. Won't go. Can't get it in any
way. Even with the front plate removed I can't get it in there. So I
compare the pumps side by side. The V8 has different castings from what's
used for 5k and 200 models. The mounting for the bracket on the 5k/200
isn't on the pump for a V8. The innards and the seals are the same for all
those models, but the external parts of the castings differ. That makes
the V8 pump just ever so slightly slimmer.
So, here I sit with no extra seals to reseal the pump I just took out.
I have a kit coming "next day air, Saturday delivery" where the shipping is
costing more than the kit itself.
But NEXT time I'll know about all this in advance and be better prepared.
