Oh, this is a sore spot as Kneale can attest.
I'm due to renew two of my cars, and like Kneale said, in Michigan the fees
are based on the new car price (ad valorem)as the State of Michigan sees it.
It's a sliding scale for the first two years and then it remains the same.
In the examples below, If I bought a brand new car valued at what they
valued my cars, I would pay $186 on a $35,000 vehicle and $266 on a $51, 500
vehicle, plus 6% MI sales tax. At the time the previous owner of my V8
(original owner) bought the car, he had to pay the luxury tax on it as well
(10% on additional $20k over $30 allowed, or $2000 in Illinois.) Yikes!
My yearly registration fees:
For example, my 1983 Urq had a yearly registration fee under $50
(weight-based)
My 1984 Urq (new price $35k) is $138
My 1991 V8 (new price $51.5k) is $196
BTW, Kneale, I think they changed the license fee to $30 and ten years (25
year or older car only used occasionally).
