I don't think the length is going to change the performance of the sensor
(within reason of course) but if you do have to splice in wire, your connections
have to be good, and use teflon wire and a heat shield (like the OEM cable) if
you are near the exhaust system.
I prefer solder and heat shrink. Butt connectors and heat shrink work well too.
If you are going to switch to a Ford sensor, it would make sense to extend the
car harness down and put the mating Ford connector on it. This makes swapping
sensors easy - and they do go bad for various reasons. I went to the extreme of
putting both a Ford 3-wire and 4-wire connector on my extension so I could
easily try out different sensors. From my experiments, they all seem to work OK
- even the 4-wire with multiple sensing windows. (the OEM unit has three)
