[V8] V8Q Salvage Value.htm

Welcome to the list! These cars are a love-hate relationship. They
will challenge your patience and your wallet, yet every time I climb
behind the wheel..............................there is not another
vehicle like it. The smoothness, the power, the handling, the German
engineering, people are amazed when they drive my "low mileage" V8.

The voltage regulator is available in most FLAPS, generic about $20,
Bosh about $40. The bearings on my alternator were in good shape at
120K, new voltage regulator still going strong at 160K.

You can have the power steering hoses rebuilt at Spokane Hose. They
know what their doing and are inexpensive and quick.
Check back of motor for leaks, the seals on the distributor fail and the
leak winds up on the exhaust, can also cause the burning smell.

Agree with Kneale, check the power steering fluid and fill with Pentosin

fluid only. Since you're having a lot of problems with the hydraulic
system, (loss of power steering, loss of brake, brake warning light,
etc).
I would also check the power steering hose(s) from the pump to the rack.

This could also be the cause of the smoke coming from underneath your as

fluid is dripping onto the exhaust pipes.

As for the alternator, use the climate control to see what the voltage
is.
Press the outside temperature button and off button at the same time and

then release. Use the + temperture button to move to channel 11, then
press
the outside temperature button and the display will show you what
volatge is
at the climate control. With the engine running you should see 13.5 or
higher depending on the condition of the battery. Select any other
button
(ECON, DEfrost, Auto) will return the display to normal operation. A
volatge regulator and brushes is fairly inexpensive. You should be able
to
replace it without having to remove the alternator.
