[V8] how to hold sprockets

Going just from memory here - but isn't the belt still on at this time in the
procedure?
If so then you wouldn't be bearing against the belt?

It is un-likely that you can get both cam locks on as described in the manual
anyway simply because the timing will have shifted slightly and the second lock
will not line up. (your case being an extreme example) Using the sprocket tool
lets you rotate the cam for lock installation and to hold it for tightening the
bolt. No chance of breaking anything if you do it this way.
