Definatley pull the Idle Stab. You can clean it while it's off.

Nope, but it's not at all easy to get the belt back on without it in there.
Can be done, though. I usually use a punch or pick. You could also use a
machine screw.

I do have that tool. It's common to every Audi/VW Timing belt except the
5-cyl's. I'd recomend getting it if you are going to do it in the future.
Then again, there are alternatives. A pin wrench, snap ring pliers, and I
thing someone said 90degree needle nose pliers.

Why do you need that off? If you are talking about the intake air temp
sender, then I can understand. It comes off with two screws, not too
difficult. Is it in the way?
