You have to line them up. They only go in one way. With new o-rings it will
be a bit of a struggle, but they will go in.

No, see above.
The easiest way for me to align them is to get the distributor in till the
slot hits the cam. Then, with a bit of pressure still pushing in with one
hand, turn the rotor till you feel it line up. Then push the distributor in
the rest of the way. There is a mark on the distributor where the rotor
should point. It is a small notch in the mounting surface for the cap.

I wouldn't recommend it. I've broken things in the past doing them this way.
Just have patience, and push hard while wigling it back and forth. It worked
best for me to be in the front of the car and pull it toward myself.
