[V8] Torn Boot Idea..? (used to be Cooling Labyrinth, used to be POP...)

I was pulling the engine cover, airbox, reservoir, etc. off my car
Thursday night to check out where the coolant was coming from and
happened to notice a pretty torn boot a few inches down from the
distributor.

This happened on my Volvo back in '95, and I "slipcovered" the old boot
with a larger boot. Wonder if this approach would work here?

What do y'all think? Whatever is inside that boot (is it
steering-related?) is getting increasingly covered in crud -- and some
protection has got to be better than no protection. Didn't explore it
much (was almost out of daylight), but it looks kind of difficult to get
to, and therefore expensive. More than my grad student budget will
allow for right now.

Any thoughts or comments are highly regarded as always.

Nathan

Sending unit is the electrical connection on the bottom of the expansion
tank that signals a low coolant level.
