... just pull the cap off and leave it to the side out of the way.  If
you have the factory dizzy caps they will have the cylinder numbers on
them, so you shouldn't need to worry about pulling the wires if you need
more room ...    

The dizzy mounting plate has a pin that locates the dizzy or the cam
lock plate in exactly one position.  The slot that drives the dizzy from
the cam is offset ... so yes, the lock plate will only engage the cam
when the engine is in the proper position for TDC compression for
cylinder 1.
