Yup. My friend's wife's A8 just got a new tranny. 80k miles I think.
I have no idea of your driving style or preferences, and an extended test drive will tell you more than anyone oin that regard, but the general consensus, at least from what I've heard and experienced, is that the A8 is better for passengers but less than satisfying for the driver.
Wallet-wise it's all the same in the end.

My $.02, having bought a 2002 A8L?
Stick with the V8. More nimble, and this board is a fantastic resource to
keep it running.
Also, the A8s have a known problem with their transmissions, which will run
you anywhere from $4,500 to $7,500 to fix. It's not a question of if, it's
when. All replacement trans are being upgraded to resolve the problem.
Don't get me wrong, the A8 is a nice car and I enjoy it, but it's not going
to be cheaper to own and it is definitely geared more toward luxury than the
V8.
Good luck.
