[V8] Limp Mode?

I've experienced limp mode from not getting the car firmly into park.  I've
noticed that I can put the shifter gently into Park turn the car off and
then back to on and have the "R" illuminated in the display.  If I start the
car it starts in limp mode.  I simply shut it off and shift from Drive to
Park and restart.

Driving to town today, I noticed the V8 was acting sluggish and think it may
have been operating in Limp Mode.  I tried shifting into lower gears (I have
an automatic) but no change.  I then turned the car off, restarted and drove
around the block -- it seem to be working fine.

I've heard of limp mode but never understood its cause nor function.  Should
I seek immediate help from a mechanic or look for an open window in a tall
building?

Lastly, can you easily check the fluid level in the transmission?  It looks
like there's only a fill port without a transmission dipstick.
