John,
I think there are plenty of us who are running non-dealer timing belts, and
haven't had any problems. I personally have done over 100 TB jobs on various
cars, and have never used a dealership belt. Never had any problems.
It's just like anything else on the car. You can find out who the original
manufacturer was and use it from a different source. I use Continental. Not
sure about the V8, but they were OEM on most VW's/Audi's into the early
90's.
