[V8] Loss of power

Afternoon folks
   
  As usual, I am turning to the group for their infinite wisdom.
   
  As I was driving into work this morning she started acting up. Stop and go traffic, give her some gas she doesn't respond. The engine revs but the transmission doesn't engage. After a few seconds it does but it seems that the engine may cut-off.
   
  Is this what some people have been refering to as the 'Limp Mode'? Is it terminal? Could it be the Cats? coz I need to replace the exhaust system.
   
  Suggestion, Comments, Fixes (temporary or permanent), admonishments - all welcome.
