I had a belt slip out of alignment on the A/C pulley and get marked up
severely, but it didn't shred before I discovered it. I replaced it
anyway, because a couple of the ribs were chewed up. A/C was making
strange noises, which called my attention to it. The A/C pulley has a
little lip on it that probably was shredding your belt.
