it cool to cheer your 4 class-favorites to victory and keep track of what
they are doing as they weave through the slower/faster traffic, but it is a
trip to watch a car such as a 911 GT3 (which I KNOW would eat my 3.6l V8 for

This is the understatement of the year - in my GT, I kept up with a GT3 around a few twisties, but the car wasn't being driven to its potential. Figure at a local track, Limerock, the GT3's are 56-57 second cars - about 8-9 seconds faster than my fastest lap, and figure that a well setup V8Q 4.2 could at best manage a 1:10 or maybe a touch higher. Of course, that's total speculation, since V8's are NOT track cars.

As for the Porsche, I'd guess the gent was running JRZ remote resevoir shocks - pricey, but worth it. Penske also makes remote resevoir shocks - both run in the 3,000$ a pair range. I'm also guessing that if you got into my 400lb spring GT (at 2,400lbs), it would feel just about the same as the boxster. Of course, my whole car cost less than his shocks, in a manner of speaking. I bet he'd have a hard time losing me, as well :-)

Most people can't really understand the difference between going fast on the street and going fast on a race course. Usually students who come to events think they are going fast, and then they go out with an instructor. There is usually a line of people waiting to go out in my GT, as it's one of the faster instructor cars - especially at momentum tracks - but ironically, when I instruct at BMW events, I'm lucky if I pass two or three other instructors the whole day, when I'm lapping instructors at the Audi schools. Similarly, my dad's Porsche race car (924S prepared - 200hp, JRZ/coilovers, 2700lbs) is one of the faster cars at BMW schools, but when he goes to a Porsche event, he's lucky to catch one or two of the street Porsches. Now, that said, these are all generally mid-highly modified street cars. To then jump into race cars is just a whole new level - and very few people can see or understand the difference between a street car, a prepared car, a street/race
car, and a factory race car.

Anyways, enough banter on this, but sounds like a cool event! Now, go see some F1 cars, and the level goes a notch higher....
