[V8] catalytic converter removal?

I ran mine with nothing after the header pipes.  It was so freaking loud my
ears were ringing when I got home.  I thought it would get quiet at some rpm
but I couldn't find it and didn't want to drive around any longer with that
damn noise.  A guy a couple houses up was changing the v8 engine on his
chevy p/u.  He always had a Corvette of some sort too.  When I started mine,
both he and his friend popped up out of the engine bay.  We spoke some time
later and he said he had thought it was only a v6.  Gotcha, Corvette man...
