If you really want to make one for "free", I'm not going to stop anyone but... For $40 you can buy one from Harbor Freight (ITEM 94190-2VGA), all-done and complete with spark plug adapters and a pretty red blow-molded case ;-)
BTW#1, if you really have the engine on TDC, the crankshaft won't rotate when air pressure is applied.  The issue is that only #1 and its companion cylinder (halfway around the firing order) are easily gauged at the crankshaft pulley. If you take the time to accurately mark every 90-degrees on the crank pulley, you can accurately place the crank and the whole job will take only two rotations of the crank. BTW#2, a noisy compressor shouldn't be an issue since very little air flows if the cylinder is good.  If it's bad, even a 5-gallon tank will flow air for quite a while before cycling ON.
