Allan, 

I think that you have answered your own question. The thing to do there
is to replace the ECU with another 4.2 car and see what happens. Or if
you'd like to step it up a bit, get an easier fix from a 3.6 ECU (bit of
a performance boost). But I think that somehow your ECU got toasted. Al
least you'll be able to verify communications.
