Okay, finally got some good snows here.
Dusted two inches off the car and hopped in to start it up. Yes, thank
you IC for letting me know my brake pads are worn. They're just fine,
thank you. This has to be a wiring error. The right sensor wires have
been twisted together after some genius PO cut the wires on the vehicle
end. The left side is intact but the pads have plenty of life.
Wait, what's this? Coolant level low? Hm. The car has done this twice
in the past two months. Letting it idle for about 20 seconds turns out
the light. Visual inspection on a cold engine shows the level to be
slightly below minimum line. For the life of me, I can't figure out
where the water is going. As before, I've had to fill it twice in the
past 60 days, but only about a 2-3 cups each time. Any suggestions on
where to look?
- When I purchased it, I had to replace the heater valve and run some
new block-to-valve hoses, so those very well could be leaking. I'll
inspect them on... some day when it's nicer out. ;)
- There's some gunkiness around the rear of the right bank, but I'm
pretty sure it's oil. I'm doing valve cover gaskets in a week or so, so
while the everything is apart, I'll take a look at all those water hoses
back there.
- There's no water on the ground, no white smoke out the back. There's
no coolant smell in the cabin. Just did oil change, no water in the oil.
- I used the radiator drain plug to drain coolant out to do the heater
valve, so there's a possibility it's leaking, but I think I would've
seen green on the ground up in the front. Only green on the ground is
behind the engine (leaking rack).
Any other possibilities? Again, when I do the valve cover gaskets, I'll
pull out the plugs and check to see if any are "steam cleaned." The car
runs like a striped-ass ape. No signs of a head gasket problem. No
overheating.
