[V8] Steering Rack Centering

The problem with this approach Jason is that your turn signals will not
cancel properly, you can damage the spiral airbag thingy, and you will
have less turning radius in one direction.
This happens because the
alignment shop did not use the tool to lock the rack in dead center
position to set the toe. A good tech would not necessarily need the tool -
he just has to make sure the steering wheel is centered when he is done,
but he would never know if someone had taken the wheel off to correct for
a bad alignment.

If you want to put things right, figure out
how to pin the rack (read the manual), make sure the steering wheel is on
right, then take it to the alignment shop and tell them to set the
alignment - and that they are not done until the wheel is straight and
level. You could even try giving them the pin if you wanted but they would
probably just try to eat it.....

FWIW, I print out the Bentley
section for alignment and hand it to them - and make them record their
numbers. This also helps if they need to get at the inner tie rods for
some reason. If these guys get anywhere near the distributor caps, they
seem to break them.

As others have noted - this is a constant
battle to pay someone to actually do an alignment right the first time.

I know that you need to be

In fact I think you mentioned that your Airbag light was on - it

could be because of this 'spiral spring' being broken, among other
