[V8] Block Heating

I'm not worried about being stranded. The car runs great in the cold
but I'm worried that I drive about 2 miles to work. Car sits in the
bitter cold all night and is then run for about ten minutes. Car then
sits for nine hours in the bitter cold before being run for about ten
minutes. That can't be good for it.

On occasion I try to drive around town to warm up the oil and dry out
the exhaust, but I drive past all those gas stations and their big
glaring numbers and it's hard to keep going...

I figure that if the engine is plugged in and warmed up while I'm not in
the vehicle, then it'll be a lot less harsh on it.

Plugs and wires, basic tune-up items. check them all. It only takes one weak link in the chain to leave you stranded.
