On the old diesel tractor and equipment engines what used to work best
was a torch. Roll up a newspaper, dip the end in the diesel tank, set
fire to the end of the newspaper and crank over the engine (usually let
it coast down the hill you parked it on the day before, batteries weren't
that great and most were 6 volt systems) and let the intake suck in the
flames, used to work every time. Wouldn't recommend it on a gasoline
powered tractor though... ;-)
