Well - unemployment has its advantages. I had some time over  
Thanksgiving break to fiddle around with some old car junk - in this  
case the alarm/remote door opener unit from a Ford.  It turns out  
that you can pretty easily wire one of these puppies up to act as a  
remote control for what ever.  I currently have one connected in  
parallel with my garage door opener so I can use a Ford keychain  
remote to open my garage door - great for the scooter or taking the  
dog for a walk, and actually cheaper than buying another remote.  
(considering I got the parts free...)
Next up, I think I will add one to the V8. It would be cool to have  
the keypad to open the car door - a feature that I really like about  
my Fords.  Not sure if I want to cut a hole in the door for the key  
pad though.
And finally - just to prove I am truly insane, I am going to hook one  
up to my stereo so I can control the volume with the small remote.   
My stereo is not visible to the infrared remote and dinner parties  
are always a problem because the speakers are right by the table.  
This would be a cool solution to that problem.
