I think this is an anti-rust feature. Both 1990's have this EXACT leak.
I always thought it was coming from behind the distributor and working
it's way forward, I changed a few seals here and there...then just plain
gave up. Looks like I made the right choice too!
The only solution to pinpointing the leak would be a dye and black light
test.
After a spirited trip through the mountains once I pulled over about half
way down in a rest area and there was a small cloud of burning oil coming
from the back of the engine somewhere. I have always suspected the
unknown leak around the top of the alternator and this episode were
somehow related. Maybe the oil retention valves sometimes get
overwhelmed and the oil gets to some gasket or seal under a bit too much
pressure?
