Mark,

Couple things. Yes, could well be a blown shock. Or/and the rubber bump stop may well have disintegrated. Have you had any suspension work done on that side? If so it could also be something improperly-tightened/ loose. Another source for a noise like you are describing is either missing or failed rear differential mount (hard to see because it's above the diff iirc). That's all I can with of for now. Good luck.

While dashing thru the snow on my 254 horse old sleigh,
I have this sporadic thump,  thump, thump from behind the rear LHS  
passenger as we go over the deeper holes..
My road is like a rutted farm track with 'pot holes' in the snow down  
to the asphalt every so often.
It sounds like something is hitting the body or almost like the Left  
rear suspension is bottoming out (hard to beleive)
Everything is quiet once we're on smooth surface again.

I have the car up in the air right now but can't see anything loose.  
The exhaust is very firmly attached.
I have never changed the rear shocks in the 10 years I've had the  
car.  Could this simply be worn out shocks?
