i think i am in the minority on this one. the A6 4.2 is WAY beyond the V8.
no, i won't trade my V8 for one. the A6 is a staggeringly good car for very
little money. the V8 feels old, obsolete and frankly uncomfortable when
compared to the A6 v8. no question the A6 is more mainstream but certainly
not like a 5 series BMW or an E class MBZ from the same vintage. prices of
the cars are fair too. you can find a 2000 or a 2001 with around or just
over 100K miles for about 9 or 10K in my neck of the woods.
I had a chance to drive a base mode A6 6000 miles in 4 days a couple of
years ago. I can say it was arguably the most comfortable car i could have
asked for in a marathon drive.
i do have some friends that own an A6 V8 and their maintenance costs have
been less then my inlaws that own an A6 v6. i don't know if this is
"normal", but take it for what it says.
on another note, any car will need work when it gets older. lots of folks
say USA made vehicles suck. my chevy truck (2001) has been the most
reliable vehicle owned. to date it has chalked up over 200K miles and has
only needed a fuel pump. my V8? well it has needed a HELL of a lot more
work then that. mileage is about the same.
anyway, buy what u want, take care of it and enjoy it!
